Honoring a Legacy: Steven Gross Transitions to Director Emeritus After Four Decades of Leading the International Horn Competition of America

Steven Gross, after over four decades of dedicated service to the international horn community, is stepping down from his position as the Executive Director of the International Horn Competition of America. Steve has been the visionary and driving force behind the development of the International Horn Competition of America, leading and developing the IHCA to a stature and level of importance consistent with the most prestigious instrumental competitions across the world.

Steve's vision for the competition has remained consistent through the years as he sought to further develop the horn as a solo instrument both in the United States and across the globe. The IHCA under Steve's leadership promotes a competition environment that is positive, supportive, and instructive. It is a unique experience of encouragement and has been a key component in the development of many professional careers.

As a further testament to Steve's ongoing dedication to the success of the IHCA, he gathered a strong Board of Directors, and Board of Advisors, who all worked closely with him to guide the ongoing evolution of the competition. Two years ago, in preparation for his coming transition, he appointed Elizabeth Freimuth, Principal Horn of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, as Co-Executive Director, and his ultimate successor. The competition will be in excellent hands as Liz assumes the primary role in the leadership of the organization, and Dr Natalie Higgins accepts the role of Co-Executive Director. Both will continue to work closely with a strong Board of Directors, and Board of Advisors as the IHCA continues forward.

The International Horn competition of America and the many who have benefited from it through the years, owe much to Steven Gross. It was his singular drive, determination, and unwavering commitment that kept the competition strong and viable for many years. As he moves into the role of Director Emeritus, and “passes the torch” to those who will continue to follow the vision and path into many successful competitions in the future, it is ultimately Steve to whom gratitude is owed for the opportunity.

With this transition, The International Horn competition of America looks forward to its ongoing role of service to the international horn community, and will remain an important resource for both developing, and established horn players, for generations to come.
